With more than 300 million people living in India, the country is home to more than a billion people.
It also boasts the world’s tallest skyscraper and the world and largest solar power plant.
In a bid to promote a cleaner, more sustainable future, many of the country’s skyscrapers and other buildings are made of stainless steel and glass.
But how does a wall design for India compare with a more traditional design?
We have asked several experts, architects and architects to find out.

A typical one will have a central face with a roof, roof trusses, and a roof-like top and bottom.
But some countries such as the UK and China have opted to use the phrase “Wall of Elements”.
“The idea is that each element can be made of multiple materials.
So the idea is a wall is not just a steel plate but also a metal frame, or the frame of an object,” says Rajesh Shah, head of architecture at PwC India.”
There is also the idea of using the materials in a different way that creates a feeling of diversity,” he adds.
“So you can say the wall is made of glass, or glass is made from metal.”

The first step to a walldesign is to find an architect to work on the design.
“The best place to start is to have someone who has been involved in design and architecture for a long time,” says Arvind Gupta, senior director at design consultancy Rana Design Group.
“That will enable them to know the concepts, know what materials they should use and the way to do it.
So they can also talk about how the design should be integrated,” he says.
“And if the client is really happy with the work, then they can give it the go-ahead.”
The first steps of a design include identifying the materials you want the wall to be made from, says Gupta.
“For example, in India we are very interested in materials for structural walls.
So for a modern building, you have to think about materials that will withstand the elements and that won’t collapse.”
Then it is time to decide on the material mix.
“A lot of the times, you can mix and match materials in different countries,” says Gupta, adding that it is best to use materials from different regions to keep the design as consistent.
“When you do this, you are using a combination of materials from India, China, South Africa, and Brazil, so you get a sense of what is in the heart of the wall,” he explains.
“If you have the same idea, then you can also make the material for the walls in India but then it is a little bit different in the design,” says Shah.
In India, designers often work with architects to get the right materials and shapes.
“We have been using steel for a while.
It has been a very durable material and a good material for a lot of other reasons,” Gupta says.
But when it comes to the construction of a wall, Gupta and others advise against using heavy steel and concrete.
“You should use a solid material,” Gupta tells Al Jazeera.
“Steel is an alloy that has good strength and toughness,” says Sandeep Kumar, a structural engineer at Gurgaon-based architectural firm KKR.
“When it comes in contact with the elements, the steel gets damaged and gets broken up and loses strength.
So we would prefer not to use steel as it has more weight.”
A design based around a buildingThe second step in a design is to select the type of building you want your wall to house.
“It is important that the design does not use materials that would collapse, and it also should not be too large,” says Rana.
“If you are going to build a large wall, then a building should be the smallest possible,” adds Gupta.

“With a building, if the material is made with the same size, then it will hold up the structure,” says Shashank.
But if the wall you want to create is smaller, then the material should be made with smaller sizes,” he clarifies.”
